Last year, before we started our 2022-2023 school year, I went on the hunt for back to school homeschooling books.
My choices were limited for sure! Though it’s getting better, there’s still not nearly enough variety out there of “homeschooling” themed books and them to be found in local libraries seems impossible! In my research for quality back to school homeschooling books I was able to compile a list of 12 books and I created a printable for you to have as a guide in your search. Feel free to click the image and ask your local library about these books or purchase them on your own.
Disclaimer: I have not been able to get my hands on all of these, there is truly a lack of them at our local library. Because of that I haven’t been able to read them all for myself. Part of me wanted to wait till I was able to read them all but the list wouldn’t have come out for a long while and I wanted to get this list into your hands before the school year started. Buy and read each one at your own discretion.
Here is our list 12 back to school homeschooling books with a brief synopsis of each straight from their amazon or store listing:
- This Is My Home, This Is My School by Jonathan Bean: This is one we have read and it was super sweet. There is mention of the mom being crabby, which my kids responded with “moms aren’t crabby”, they are truly the sweetest kiddos. Here’s the brief synopsis:“For young Jonathan and his sisters, Mom is the teacher and a whole lot more, and Dad is the best substitute any kid could want. From math, science, and field trips to recess, show-and-tell, and art, a school day with this intrepid, inventive family will seem both completely familiar and totally unique”.
- My Learning Adventure Begins by Carol Hookham: We have not read this one for ourselves but we are on the waitlist at the library so I will update as soon as I do get my hands on it. Here’s the brief synopsis: “A six-year-old boy tells the story about his first year as a homeschool student. He discovers that school can be an adventure learned from a book while sitting at the kitchen table, and from other people and places as well”.
- My Mommy, My Teacher by Johannah Bluedorn: We have not read this one for ourselves but we are on the waitlist at the library so I will update as soon as I do get my hands on it. This is one im anxiously waiting on since there’s five kiddos and my kids will be able to relate. Here’s the brief synopsis: “A delightful children’s picture book which tells the story of a young girl and her family as they learn and work together on their farm. Her mother teaches her at home along with her three brothers and her baby sister. The story is illustrated with beautiful watercolor paintings”.
- Miss Teacher Mom by Katlynne Mirabal: We have not read this one for ourselves but we are on the waitlist at the library so I will update as soon as I do get my hands on it. Here’s the brief synopsis: “Miss Teacher Mom is a children’s book written from the perspective of a little girl who is homeschooled. She loves that her mom is also her teacher and explains some of the reasons why! This fun rhyming children’s book takes place in the context of one day. It’s a fun read with beautiful illustrations and a very positive tone. This book will help your child identify with and become excited about homeschooling and the best part- that mom is her teacher, too”!
- Charlie Goes to School by Ree Drummond: We were able to get this one from the library and it was a very sweet read. “Charlie the Ranch Dog may be top dog, but he’s ready to share his skills—and his responsibilities. Charlie wants to start his own school for the ranch animals. If Suzie, Kitty, and Walter can learn how to lend a paw, he can focus on other important things, like napping”!
- I Am Learning All the Time by Rain Perry Fordyce: We have not read this one for ourselves but we are on the waitlist at the library so I will update as soon as I do get my hands on it. Here’s the brief synopsis: “When a man at the bus stop asks, ‘why are you boys not in school today?’ five and a half year old Hugh begins to wonder that same question. While he thinks about that … he tells the story about homeschool life with his friends, his big brother Chas, and his mom and dad”
- Lily Stays for School by Robert Bortins: We have not read this one for ourselves but we are on the waitlist at the library so I will update as soon as I do get my hands on it. Here’s the brief synopsis: “This whimsical picture book about four-year-old homeschool student Lily is a wonderful way to explain to beginning homeschool students what to expect when learning at home”.
- I am a Home Schooler by Julie Voetberg: We have not read this one for ourselves but we are on the waitlist at the library so I will update as soon as I do get my hands on it. Here’s the brief synopsis: “Describes the experiences of a nine-year-old girl who is taught by her mother on their farm in Washington State”.
- The First Day of Homeschool by Kaitlin Harris: We have not read this one for ourselves but we are on the waitlist at the library so I will update as soon as I do get my hands on it. Here’s the brief synopsis: “Cinnamon rolls, bike rides, and picnics in the park! Experience the first day of homeschool through the eyes of an eager 2nd grade boy and his little sister, and prepare to reimagine everything you think you know about the classroom”.
- The First Day of Homeschool by Michelle Fredrickson: We have not read this one for ourselves but we are on the waitlist at the library so I will update as soon as I do get my hands on it. Here’s the brief synopsis: “‘Twas the first day of homeschool,” begins the poetic tale of a young child’s return to schooling. The story weaves through the exciting first day as the family enjoys a special time of learning, helping, and sharing together – interrupted only by a mischievous visit from Homeschool Elf who hides the children’s school supplies and sends them on a hunt to find the missing books, pencils, and more”!
- Mama why am I homeschooled? by Jacy Ruwe and Elin Johnson: This is one we read and own. It is not super rich in content but it is a very sweet read and the illustrations are beautiful. Here’s the brief synopsis: “It’s a question that nearly every homeschooled child asks at some point. With its delightful, hand-painted illustrations and rhythmic structure, this charming book shows readers how they can learn scholastic skills through everyday life. Sometimes, ditching the desk makes all the difference. In choosing to homeschool, your family gains the freedom to learn while snuggled up in a porch swing. Science lessons can take place in the garden. Math facts can be mastered in a grocery aisle. Days are spent in the company of loving family. The school bell doesn’t ring until tired eyes are amply rested. The homeschool life is a simpler life“.
- My Schoolhouse Rocks by Katlynne Mirabal: We have not read this one for ourselves but we are on the waitlist at the library so I will update as soon as I do get my hands on it. Here’s the brief synopsis: “My Schoolhouse Rocks!” is a children’s book written from the perspective of a boy who is homeschooled. He loves being homeschooled and he shares all of the ways that his schoolhouse is awesome! It’s a fun read with beautiful illustrations and a very positive tone. This book will help your child identify with and become excited about homeschooling and the fun you can have while learning at home”.
